Revenue Cycle Management

Key leaders from Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA), will provide an overview of the end-to-end revenue cycle from a process perspective. This workshop will highlight those components of the process, which if not done accurately, can result in payment denials. HFMA will share five leading practices in denials prevention. As part of this process review, the industry standard KPIs to measure performance will be outlined.

HFMA is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to leading the financial management of health care. Their diverse community has more than 56,000 members, including healthcare finance leaders and professionals from hospitals and health systems, provider organizations, physician practices, business partners and payer markets.

Learner Outcomes
After completing this session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the high-level process steps in a mature revenue cycle
  • Know the connection between completion of key front-end process steps and denials
  • Learn the difference between administrative vs. clinical denials
  • Discover five leading practices related to denials prevention and management
  • Outline the key KPIs related to revenue cycle performance tied to denials

Fact Check! How to Design Accurate and Compelling Analytic Reports

Visualizing data is easy given the plethora of tools available. But are you displaying data the right way?  This hands-on workshop will use Google Data Studio, a free tool, to visualize a healthcare-related data set while learning the correct charts to build for each data type. We will also briefly touch on calculated fields and metrics. Attendees will walk away from this session with a complete report designed with interactive controls such as drop-down lists and date range selectors.

Learner Outcomes
After completing this session, participants will be able to:

  • Define the types of data used to visualize information
  • Describe the various chart types used to visualize data
  • Identify the correct type of chart to use for each data type

Presenters at this session will provide an overview of ICD-11 structure and content, highlighting new classification concepts and methods such as pre- and post-coordination, cluster coding, multiple parenting and linearizations. They will also provide instructions regarding the ICD-11 classification guidelines, especially for the mandatory use of additional codes and post-coordination. 

Attendees will receive a document with 50 common diagnoses. They will be able to use either a computer, tablet, or a smartphone to access the WHO coding tool and/or browser, search for the diagnosis and assign the appropriate ICD-11 MMS code(s).

Presenters will engage with attendees and review all of the correct codes for the diagnoses. Participants will be asked to complete a short survey regarding the use of ICD-11 MMS and the WHO tools.

Learner Outcomes
After completing this session, participants will be able to:

  • Classify 50 common diagnoses using the WHO ICD-11 MMS coding tool, browser and guidelines
  • Apply the WHO ICD-11 MMS guidelines for the use of morbidity code assignment
  • Compare and contrast the outcome of ICD-11 MMS code assignments with ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-AM

This session will provide hands-on practice assigning 2018 ICD-10-CM and CPT codes to case scenarios. The new 2018 guidelines will be covered, along with any relevant Coding Clinic® references. 

Attendees will receive a document with beginner and intermediate level case scenarios to assign ICD-10-CM and CPT codes to. These case scenarios will include both inpatient and outpatient cases. Attendees will need to have access to the 2018 ICD-10-CM and CPT code sets, either books or access to an encoder.

The workshop facilitator will engage with attendees and review all of the correct codes for the diagnoses and procedures. Participants will be encouraged to ask questions and actively participate in the workshop.

Learner Outcomes
After completing this session, participants will be able to:

  • Classify common procedures to the 2018 version of CPT
